New Dutch Passport

New in DocumentChecker: The Netherlands’ Passport & ID Card

The Netherlands has introduced a new passport and ID card model that improves both security and accessibility. Existing passports will be valid until their expiration dates. When you apply for a new passport or ID card, you will automatically receive the latest version.

This latest design adheres to the most recent international and national standards and regulations.

On the 30th of September, Leiderdorp Mayor, Tjarda Struik, handed out the first ID document to symbolise an inclusive society.

Quoted from Tjarda Struik’s Instagram account:

“As someone who is visually impaired myself, I understand the impact of these changes. It’s great to see how technology and empathy are coming together to make life more accessible for everyone.”

The National Office for Identity Data (RVIG) also mentioned “It is our responsibility to ensure that every individual in the Netherlands has access to reliable and user-friendly means of identification”.

The new Dutch passport and identity card are available in DocumentChecker.

What’s New

The new Dutch passport includes security features that enhance security and accessibility. A notable enhancement is the introduction of a coloured photo using LASINK™ Helios technology. In addition to the main picture and a smaller picture on the passport datapage, it also contains another coloured picture on page 3.

Additionally, the passport and ID card include a tactile element to assist visually impaired people. The government agency consulted with experts and people with visual impairments when developing the new IDs. The passport and ID card have three diagonal ridges (perceptible relief) on both sides. These ridges allow holders to feel how to hold the card and as well as to help distinguish the ID from other types of cards.
