Optical character recognition or optical character reader (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, hand-written or printed text into machine-encoded text. OCR technology enables you to convert different types of documents, such as scanned ID documents or images captured by a digital camera, into editable and searchable data. The technology is widely used as a form of data entry in various business systems to enhance efficiency and speed up customer enrolment.
Keesing’s optical character recognition (OCR) technology
AuthentiScan uses OCR technology to extract data such as name, surname, MRZ (machine readable zone) and other details from an image capture of an ID document. Our OCR technology is highly accurate in capturing, converting and processing ID document data.
In many AuthentiScan use cases, our OCR autofill option extracts the data from our client’s customer’s ID document to automatically fill out application or registration forms. This reduces the chance of customers entering a different name from the one on their ID documents.
Accurate and high-precision data extraction
To achieve an accurate and high-precision extraction process, we combine a deep learning approach, based on memory-driven neural networks, with a classical pattern-matching detector that is specifically oriented on individual characters.
Standard OCR relies on the specificity of words in human language for correcting reading errors. With ID documents, however, it requires different approaches because the MRZ and other fields can be seen as terms that are not included in any dictionary.
We therefore blend both context-free analysis and grammar automata to reconstruct the textual interpretation of ID documents.
AuthentiScan’s OCR technology allows users to cross-reference data points shown in different parts of the ID document (e.g., surname in the visual inspection zone [VIZ] of the document vs. surname in the MRZ) to help businesses:
