According to Greek Citizen Protection Minister Yiannis Economou, this ID card is intended to meet the most recent security standards set by the European Union (EU) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

These standards govern the creation of more secure and internationally recognised identification documents, as mentioned by the Keesing Platform article about the latest Greek ID.
